Character Biography.

Chantelle/Eva.
Eva is 20 and the oldest of the group which means that the other three girls look up to her for guidance and when they started to become friends it was an unspoken value that Eva would be the leader. Eva is rather sensible and mature which is shown through both her room and dress. Eva's room is plain and simple but has some pictures and posters. Eva's dress is lacy black but she is wearing burnt orange platform shoes which helps to discover that she does have a fun side that isn't on show all the time because she is a role model for the other girls.

Abigail/Riley.
Riley is the second oldest at the age of 19 meaning that she is very mature as well as Eva who is the oldest the group. Riley has a very girly personality and likes the colour pink but isn't overly excited if she sees pink clothes because she does wear other colours just as much. Riley is the type of girl who has to look out for someone else, normally someone younger, which is why she sometimes 'mothers' Cassie. Riley is rather maternal but she like to take small risks in everyday tasks because she is still fun. Riley's room is filled with basic and unisex colours which shows how mature she can be but she has a pink bedspread with teddy's on it which helps people see that she is a girly girl.

Megan/Scarlet.
Scarlet is only 18 which means she is the second youngest and she has a gothic style which is called a grunger, this would have been a bad personality type for the character if she played a bigger part. Due to Scarlet dying within the first two minutes, she is not a big character and we decided that rather then changing her entire room to fit a different personality type would be a bigger task than we had the time for which is why we thought she should be the person who is killed off first. You can tell that Scarlet follows the gothic style due to her black and white dress and the style of her duvet covers.

Kimberley/Cassie.
Cassie is 17 years old and is the youngest of the entire group, and because of this she is looked after by her friends. They allow her to drink because although she is a bit younger, she is still part of the group and she also looks older. As Cassie is the youngest of the group she tries to fit into the older group by passing off a slutty personality especially when going out with the group. This is shown through her dress which is rather short at the front and enhances her breasts because of the leopard print that is on it. She also loves her leopard print pattern which is shown through the layout of her room, her dress and her pet which is kept in her room.

The Killer.
He is a fairly young male who stalks the group and attends the same university. He is a mystery and a creep to the girls as they do not know that much about him and yet he is always around. The killer is a sociopath who gets his thrills from killing young women and there is no known reason why he has targeted this group of girls. He chose a knife as his murder weapon because it is more personal as you have to be close to the victim and he enjoys the struggle and the fight. His first victim in the film is killed within their house showing that he is intrusive and turns a safe environment into a grave.

Target Audience Demographic.

Anyone who likes a Thriller film may go to see our film however we have narrowed it down to who would most likely to be the age range that would go to watch this Thriller and the reasons why they might be there to watch it.

We know that the most common age range to go to the cinema is anyone between the ages of 16 and 24 and this is why we decided it would be a good idea to try and target them so that if we were going to film the rest and put it in the cinemas then it would gain more money for the company. We have made the film appeal to both boys and girls which was one of the best idea's we have had because it makes it a good film to watch when on a date. To make it easier to analyse I have split the groups into 3.
  • 16-17 Girls
  • 18-24 Girls
  • Boys

Girls.
We have targeted 16-17 girls because they mostly like to go to parties or aspire to go to them when they enter university. This is the stage when they are going through sixth form or college which could be a stressful time and they like to have fun. The girls in the film are also young actors and are based to be from this age group. Within the ages of 16-17 you are stereotyped into a specific category and where each of the girls are the outcasts of their age group with different personalities and that is why they have become great friends. This may help boost confidence of those girls that feel they are alone.
We have targeted 18-24 year olds because they are the most common ages to go to the cinema, we have adapted the start of our film to target them as the actors are young and they are playing as young girls. Another thing that would appeal to this age range of girls is the dress sense because they are all different styles which are popular at the current time. The girls in the film are meant to be girls at university and college who tend to go out to parties frequently.

Boys.
In general boys are attracted to anything that may give them an adrenaline rush which is normally action adventures, horrors and thrillers. Our film should also appeal to girls which makes it easier for the boys to take their girlfriends out to see a film that they would both enjoy. If the boys did use this as a date film, it gives them the chance to console their scared girlfriends during and at the end of the film if needed. There is also a sexual nature to the film which would appeal to the boys because they are attractive girls going to a big party and there will be girls of all different natures. This could include some ‘slutty’ girls like the character of Cassie going to the party.

Evaluation- Scarlet and The Killer.

Our first piece of filming was the scenes that take place within Megan's room, this includes her getting ready, the ringing phone, Scarlet on the bed, the dress and the killer walking out of the room. There were a few errors whilst filming these scenes which resulting in us having to re-film some of them. Due to this being the first set of filming that we had done, it showed that we didn't have enough footage to include a build-up of revealing the dead body.

Me and Megan acted and filmed the scenes multiple times but we did not realize it would be better to have little shots that revealed the dead body which would increase the tension and build up more of a story line for the rest of the film.
If we were to do this again then we would make sure that we had close-ups of small details which would increase the tension and slowly revealing the body to the audience.

When we started to edit the piece together, we realized that the panning shots were no good to use because they were jumping due to having to work with a tricky tripod. As the scenes were jumping noticeably we had to use what we could from the filming although this was not enough to fulfill what we was looking to achieve.
If we were to re-film these scenes then I would make sure that every time the camera or tripod made the filming jump that I will stop recording and then start recording again to ensure that it has a better flow to it and that we can use the pan and zooming shots we would like to use within our film.
As a group we decided that re-filming all of this would take more time than we had to finish, so instead of this we thought that we could take cuts of what we did have and hoped that it worked for the best. When we tried to sort this out and edit it correctly and to how we wanted it, there were still a few errors and we found out that we still didn't have all the correct footage or enough of what we needed. Although this ensured us knowing what we needed to film instead of having to re-film the whole thing again.

We had to keep re-filming the shots of the phone because of the times that were shown on it. First of all it still had the correct time of when we were actually filming (around 5:00 pm) which would have been a terrible mistake of we were to include it because the girls call each other just before 10:00 pm. Secondly we had the correct timing but due to us having to keep re-filming this scene the time on the phone kept going which meant the time we actually wanted (10:56) had been changed which may change the events for the rest of the opening.

Lastly we were looking at the killer walking out of the room, this was difficult because we had to make the surroundings dark because of the time that the film is set, however when we got back and uploaded the footage, it was too dark. As a group we didn't see this as a problem but then we knew what we was looking for and what was supposed to be happening but when we played it to a small audience there was no recollection of what this could have been because the scene was far too dark.
We re-filmed the killer walking out of the room but made sure we had the artificial lighting of using the light that was in the passage way. At first I thought that this would take away the seriousness from tension we were trying to create, although when uploaded, it was definitely better than when it was almost pitch black.
On the re-film, you can see that the bathroom door was still open whereas in the original it had been closed, I feel that the door should have been shut but it is only a minor error meaning we could get away with this. Another reason I think we would be able to get away with this is because not everyone has their bathroom door constantly shut so it could apply to some of the audience.

Costume and Make-Up Ideas.

Megan (Scarlet) -18

  • White Vest Top
  • Black Leggings
  • Black Socks
  • Black+White Checkered Dress
  • Pale Pink Lipstick
  • Dark Eye Shadow
  • Eyeliner
  • Mascara
At first we thought that it would be a good idea for Megan (Scarlet) to just wear her dress because she is obviously getting ready for the same party that the other 3 girls are going to. Another thought we had was that the fake blood would ruin her dress so we changed her costume idea to a vest top and leggings this was because she doesn’t wear the vest top often which means she could get rid of the top if she wanted to. The Black leggings are so that she is comfortable and if the blood gets on her legs then it wouldn’t show as much therefore wouldn’t ruin her leggings. The dress also indicates her personality as a gothic type of girl because it is the same style as the stereotyped gothic personality would normally wear. The make-up also makes her look less like she has life within her body which is what a gothic would normally wear which could also foreshadow that she is going to die quite early on during the film. However it emphasis the innocence because you can see in her eyes and her attitude and tastes that she is still young.

Chantelle (Eva) -20
  • Black Laced Dress
  • Burnt Orange Platforms
  • Natural Lip Colour
  • Brown Eye Shadow
  • Mascara
  • Fake Lashes
Chantelle (Eva) is the oldest of the group and therefore needs to look like she is able to control 3 other girls whilst having fun and looking nice for a party.
ANALYSE DRESS
The dress needed to be a zipped dress because the two scenes between Eva and Riley link by zipping up the back of the dress. The burnt orange platforms shows that she need to have a height advantage over the rest of the group. This could show Eva’s age, height and experience compared to the rest of the girls. Eva is the leader of the group and needs to be the most sensible person, and that is why she wears natural make-up, apart from the fake lashes. The fake lashes show that she is ready to go out and have a fun time with her girls.

Abigail (Riley) -19
  • Cream + Black Dress
  • Black Heeled Sandals
  • Natural Foundation
  • Pink Lipstick
  • Eyeliner
  • Mascara
The dress I am wearing plays into the hands of my character’s (Riley) girly personality because it is not too long and not revealing which shows she is just trying to have a good time with a group of friends rather than looking at anything else. High heels shoes are always used to represent a person who is going to a party even if they have different agenda’s or plans for the night out. Sandals are more of a girly thing to wear especially when at a party because it  portrays the image that she isn’t worried about people standing on her feet as she would more likely be sat down talking to her friends. My character wears natural make-up because she has a girly personality and wears minimal make-up as girly girls usually like the natural look.

Kimberley (Cassie) -17

  • Leopard Print + Black Dress
  • Leopard Print High Heels
  • Natural Foundation
  • Red Lip Liner
  • Red Lipstick
  • Eyeliner
  • Mascara
Kimberley’s character (Cassie) has been labelled the ‘slut’ although she is the youngest of the group, however this could be the reason she dresses to impress in order to make her look like she is older and she belongs with the other girls. The leopard print part of the dress emphasis the chest area and brings peoples attention there, this could be her aim because she is going to a party and therefore must want more attention then others from the guys. As the dress is shorter at the front and long at the back makes her legs look longer and whilst Cassie is wearing heels it makes her look taller and indicates she might be to young to be at the party. Cassie is wearing natural foundation which would make her look slightly more tanned than usual and she puts a lot of effort into making her lips look more defined because of the lipstick and lip liner. The eyeliner and mascara would also help her to bring out the colour and brightness of her eyes.

Daniel (Killer)
  • Black Hooded Jacket
  • Jeans
  • Trainers
The character Daniel is playing is the killer and we need him to be very mysterious and hidden. The reason he has to wear a black hooded jacket is because it is easier to hide in dark places which is helpful because it is during the night. A weakness of the costume ideas for the killer is that you are able to see that he is a male, which eliminates some of the mystery we tried to create. You can tell that the character is a male because of the way he is dressed as many males are not bothered with their looks. Jeans and trainers isn’t the best looking dress code for a female as they could be classed as ‘unnatural’ or ‘scruffy’ but if you were to ask a male what they thought, they are most likely to have a different comment.

Props Log.

We have looked through the animatics and thought about everything we need to include into our props log and we have come up with:

  • Fake Blood
  • White Bed Sheets
  • A Knife
  • 4 Mobile Phones
  • Alarm Clock
  • 3 Mirrors
  • 2 Mascara’s

The fake blood is an essential when creating a Thriller film and even when just filming the first 2 minutes it is still needed. Due to there being a death within the first two minutes we need to indicate that the character Scarlet (Megan) has been stabbed. We need the fake blood to show on the body (to show where she has been stabbed), on the bed sheets (to indicate she has bled a lot) and on the murder weapon (because no murder weapon is clean straight away). We need a lot of fake blood because she is going to be stabbed in the chest near the heart which would bleed a lot.

We need to use white bed sheets because the fake blood would show up more on the white sheets rather than the usual black bed sheets Megan has on her bed. Another reason we decided to use cheap white bed sheets is that we didn't want to stain her actual bed sheets. Due to the bed sheets being white which is naturally a pure colour that indicates an innocent young person has died.

Using a knife as the murder weapon because it is a common household item that anyone would be able to get a hold of and it is a more personal weapon of choice. This could foreshadow the killers story of his vengeance about girls in university. Guns are not as discreet as a knife because they are bulkier and more noticeable, where as a knife is small and concealable. We chose the knife because you have to be up close and quiet to be able to kill without the victim suspecting anything, but with a gun you can shoot from a distance.

We need to use four mobile phones because there are four girls that need to communicate with each other. The start of the film is centered around the four girls before the party and trying to contact Scarlet (Megan) because they don't know what happened to her.

An alarm clock is needed because this is when the leader of the group Eva (Chantelle) knows when to call the rest of the girls to make sure that they are ready for the party. The alarm is also there to tell the audience what the time is which also helps to indicate the ages of the girls. This is because the time that the alarm goes off is 9:50 and most girls in university would not have a specific times they have to be back because they live with other girls their age not parents.

We are using 3 mirrors for Scarlet (Megan), Riley (Abigail) and Cassie (Kimberley) to use whilst getting ready to go to the party. They are props because although Scarlet (Megan) doesn't use the mirror, her dress is hanging on the mirror. The reason we decided on putting the dress on the mirror because of the set-up of Megan's room, this is due to the fact you can see the door-way in the mirror. Riley (Abigail) and Cassie (Kimberley) need to use the mirror to put on the make-up that links the two scenes together.

The two types of mascara is needed because they are the one factor that links the scene between Riley (Abigail) and Cassie (Kimberley) as we use other factors to link the other girls together.

Institutional Features.

The institution we have decided to use to produce our film is Summit Entertainment which are based in America. Since 2006, Summit has become an individual production company after working with Lions Gate and Universal. Although they had officially launched as Summit Entertainment in 1993 as a production, distribution and sales organisation.

Some of the films that Summit have produced include:
The Twilight Saga (2008) - Romantic Fantasy Film
The Hurt Locker (2009) - American War Film
The Darkest Hour (2011) - Science Fiction Thriller Film
Sinister (2012) - Supernatural Horror Film
Escape Plan (2013) - Action Thriller Film

The film that we are creating we have chosen the genre as a Thriller film because of the features that it contain. The features that we are including in our film is that there is a realistic and natural representation of the young girls who start of getting ready for the party. The killer is not a natural representation of every day life because we have indicted that he is sociopath on the war path, but you do hear about people who kill within the news but it is rarely someone you know. This is one of the reasons that we chose Summit Entertainment to produce our film because they mainly produce Thriller films recently.
