Evaluation 6- What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

We have learnt how to set up the tripod properly because at the start when we were filming the preliminary task, we didn’t have access to them and therefore didn’t use them. When we were filming the mise-en-scene talk, we needed to use the tripod because there was nothing to rest it on and we thought that it would be a good idea to learn how to set it up before we started filming the scenes. This has helped us to make sure that the camera is still so that it looks like a professional film in the end, however the tripod also made parts of it look rather jumpy and no matter how many times we re-filmed the scene to get it right, it still jumped.

We had to know how to navigate the cameras to find what we needed and to make sure what we had filmed looked okay at the end of the day instead of forever going back and forth. We learnt where to find the albums to watch back what we had just filmed and this helped because it helped us to see what went wrong and what we could have done better in the same day as the original filming. The main worry that we had was the memory card because at one point it had gone missing and we weren’t the only media class using this set of cameras.

We used the iMacs for multiple different things, for example; the bloggers, uploading footage, editing, and creating music. The iMacs have different icons then a normal computer or laptop which meant we had to know what we were looking for when using them. We hadn’t used Final Cut Express, GarageBand or iMovie before so when we knew what the icons were, we were knew where to find them.
The icons we used most frequently on the iMacs were 1-Finder, 2-Safari, 6-iMovie, 7-Final Cut Express and 10-GarageBand as shown in the above picture.

This is how Final Cut Express was set out and we had to look at all the different tools whilst trying to edit. At first, we were always getting messed when editing our preliminary task but when it came to editing the final product we had got used to the set out a bit more and found it easier to use. We learnt where everything was and for some things that we didn’t know how to use we tried to find it on YouTube as a tutorial. Whilst using Final Cut Express we had to figure out how to separate clips and cut them so that we had a film that flowed well. We also had to find the different effects and how to add the text, which we didn’t find until closer to the end of our project and we then we tested which would fit better with the nature of our film. We also looked at how to unlink the video and the audio so that we could delete some of the audio and replace it with music. Another thing that we learnt how to do whilst using Final Cut Express was putting two screens on at the same time which was rather difficult to begin with as we didn’t know how to set it out properly until looking at the tutorial on YouTube.

We rarely used iMovie but we had to use it as a transport to put out footage onto final cut then to revert it back to our final product. We learnt how to import on a big scale so that we didn’t spend all of our time trying to upload our footage into final cut. As we rarely used iMovie and didn’t keep up to date with how to import the footage every time we used it, it was like it was the first time.

Before we did our preliminary task, we were told to mess around with GarageBand and try to find where everything was situated. I didn’t do very well with this as I am not someone who can tell what sounds good and what doesn’t. This one the main reason that I did not try to create the music that was added in to our finished product, Chantelle and Megan did this for our group.

During the course of our coursework we didn’t have to learn how to use YouTube or how to navigate and find the things that we needed because as teenage girls we were already used to this. We had to create a YouTube account so that we could get feedback on out finished product once we had uploaded it which some of us already had and knew how to use. In the end we didn’t get any feedback from the video on YouTube apart from other people within our class at school which meant their views were biased, although we did get quite a few people who watched it.

Facebook was similar to YouTube, none of us needed to learn how to use and navigate Facebook because we all had a Facebook account to start with and knew how to do everything we needed to upload the video and ask people for feedback, again we didn’t get very much of it.

  1. You have covered a range of technologies here Abigail, and shown their worth to your product. You need to valuate their usefulness and give an idea of whether you would want to develop knowledge of them for the future. Would more usage of a technology embed it more firmly in your brain?
